| With a constant flow of Mexican
commemoratives after 1953, it is easier to establish the periods of
certain types of paper than using the definitives for this as you
usually have no idea when a certain version of the definitives started
....
Take the watermark MEX-MEX on uncoated, non-OBA, non-phosphorescent paper.[OBA = optical brightening agents also known as "fluorescent" as it reacts white under the UV-lamp, but this reaction disappears when taken the lamp away from the stamps : 08.05.1953 Miguel Hildalgo y Costilla stamps; until 13.07.1963 Belisario Dominguez; This type of paper was relatively thin and had gum arabic that was broken in 2 diagonal directions! The diagonal lines are rather coarse and give the impresson of crude squares. The next type of paper, with watermark MEX uncoated, non-OBA, non-phosphorescent, was slighlty thicker, still with a gum arabic that was NOT broken but could have craquelé occasionaly: 09.10.1963 American Philatelic Society; until 04.06.1966 A. de Urdaneta What is typical [?] for this type of paper - Samuel Jones? - and some of its successors is the presence of yellow fibers! Yellow fibers for the 1950 definitives as well! In 1967 pre-olympic blocks printed in offset-litho had the watermark MEX on uncoated, non-OBA, non-phosphorescent paper, issued 12.10.1967.Most likely left-overs from the 1963-1966 period. The second period with MEX-MEX on uncoated, non-OBA, non-phosphorescent paper: 24.06.1966 Spanish American Postal Union; until 15.10.1966 Olympic Games 40c this paper was as thin as in the first period, and also the gum breaking was the same! The third period with MEX-MEX on uncoated, OBA, non-phosphorescent paper: 15.10.1966 Olympic Games 80c; until 08.06.1968 Martin Luther King The difference with the previous period lies not only in the slightly thicker paper, the paper has OBA and the gum breaking is more regular and sharper! The change of paper can be found within the 1966 Olympic Games set.... The second period with MEX on uncoated, OBA, non-phosphorescent paper: 06.10.1968 Olympic Flame; until 18.12.1971 Monterey In this period, more than in the previous one, the wire side of the paper [with the gum!] shows NO grooves and is often felted. I.e it looks like the fibers are coming out and give you the impression with soaked-off stamps that parts from the cover hadn't come off yet. The fourth period with MEX-MEX on uncoated, OBA, phosphorescent paper: 19.10.1971 Lázaro Cardillas; until 16.03.1973 Tourisme There are overlaps with the MEX watermark on uncoated, OBA, non-phosphorescent paper. Both in late 1971 as in 1972! The fifth period with MEX-MEX on coated, non-OBA, phosphorescent paper: 14.09.1973 International Meteorological Organisation 07.03.1975 Acali Expedition This type of paper, also in its sixth period (1977-1981), can be found in the 1975 Mexico Exportas series! Known there as "papel 2". And also that there is NO sign of yellow fibers as with the MEX watermarked paper [Samuel Jones?] With a bit of good will you can see the "acanalado" horizontal lines of the paper wire!
